If your property still has a Zinsco, GTE-Sylvania, or Federal Pacific (FPE) electrical panel, it's a real safety issue — and increasingly, a reason insurance companies are cancelling or refusing to renew policies. We replace these panels for single-family homes and apartment buildings alike, across Los Angeles.

What are Zinsco and Federal Pacific panels?

Zinsco (later sold under the GTE-Sylvania name) and Federal Pacific Electric (FPE, known for its "Stab-Lok" breakers) both manufactured residential electrical panels widely installed in Southern California homes from roughly the 1950s through the 1980s. Both designs share a well-documented flaw: the breakers can fail to trip during an overload or short circuit, letting a fault continue rather than shutting it off — often with no visible warning from outside the panel.

Why insurance companies are cancelling policies

As awareness of the fire risk has grown, more insurance carriers in California are flagging Zinsco and Federal Pacific panels during underwriting and home inspections. It's increasingly common for a policy to be non-renewed, or a new policy denied outright, simply because one of these panels is present — regardless of whether it has ever caused a problem.

Why replace it now

A full panel and service replacement resolves the hazard and gives you documentation to show your insurance carrier that the panel has been brought up to current standards — often the difference between keeping your policy and losing it.

How to tell if you might have one

✓ The panel cover is labeled "Zinsco," "GTE-Sylvania," "Sylvania," "Federal Pacific Electric," or "FPE"
✓ Breakers have colored push-buttons, or are marked "Stab-Lok," instead of standard toggles
✓ Your home was built roughly between the 1950s and 1980s
✓ Breakers feel loose, don't reset cleanly, or the panel has never been inspected
